The La Yuma Story

Our History

A Dream Fulfilled

Several decades ago, Chef Pepe Diaz was imprisoned in Cuba under the regime of Fidel Castro. Today, he is the proud owner of La Yuma, a bar and restaurant with 2 locations in Key West and Tampa, FL. Food, family, and Cuban roots are at the heart of La Yuma, and Chef Pepe’s story is nothing short of captivating.
Pepe’s culinary career began when he cooked for his fellow inmates during his time in prison. After his release, he fled to Spain before eventually settling down in the United States.
Throughout his journey, Pepe never stopped improving his talents in the kitchen. That played a monumental role in fulfilling his dream of becoming a bona fide restaurateur.

A New Beginning

Pepe met his wife, Tania, while they were both working at a restaurant in Miami. Together with their children, they established El Meson de Pepe in Key West. 5 generations of their family have worked in different capacities in their newest restaurant venture, La Yuma.

A Family Affair

La Yuma takes pride in being a family-owned business. Coast Guard veteran Ashley Clevenger serves as the General Manager, while his wife, Attorney Thania Diaz Clevenger, is focused on the business' marketing efforts. Our closely-knit team is constantly supported by the family’s patriarch and matriarch, Chef Pepe and Tania
